How to read marathon checkpoint deadlines
Finishing within six hours and reaching every checkpoint before it closes are not identical conditions. When choosing a marathon, read the intermediate deadlines as well as the finish time limit.
Check when the clock starts
Gun time starts with the starting signal. Net time starts when you cross the start line. Runners starting farther back can have a substantial difference between the two.
For example, a six-hour limit from a 9:00 start means a 15:00 deadline. Someone crossing the line at 9:15 has five hours and 45 minutes remaining. This illustrates the calculation; it does not predict the start delay at any particular race.
Estimate the margin at each checkpoint
At a constant pace, an approximate arrival time is:
Arrival time = gun time + start delay + target duration × checkpoint distance ÷ 42.195
Here, target duration means the time from crossing the start line to finishing. Subtract the arrival time from the checkpoint deadline to find the margin. A negative margin means the plan misses that deadline.
This simple calculation does not include water stops, toilet breaks, congestion or pace changes on hills. A plan that only just meets the deadline leaves no room for stops.
Compare actual races
The official rules for the Mito Komon Manyu Marathon 2026 list a 9:00 start, a six-hour finish limit and five intermediate checkpoints. The Ehime Marathon 2027 starts at 10:00 and also has a six-hour limit, but lists ten intermediate checkpoints. The same overall limit does not mean the same intermediate schedule.
Runners Commons displays a simulator where an official checkpoint table is available. Adjust the target time to see where your margin becomes small. It is a constant-pace estimate, so use it alongside the organizer's participant instructions.
Before entering
- Confirm that the information is for the edition you intend to run.
- Check whether deadlines use gun time or an individual start time.
- Look for updates to checkpoint distances and closing times.
- Check bib collection and the deadline for joining the start corral.
Use the race directory to compare dates. Entry may close before the advertised deadline when capacity is reached; confirm availability on the official website.
