What to check before comparing running shoe specifications
Before comparing shoe specifications, check that the measurements use comparable conditions. This guide explains how to narrow down options with our specification tables. It does not rank models or review their ride.
Read weight alongside reference size
A figure such as 250 g is incomplete for a strict comparison unless you know the size it represents. Check whether the manufacturer refers to one shoe, which size was measured and which version of the shoe is listed.
Runners Commons shows a reference size where it has been verified. We do not convert an unknown reference size to a presumed common size. For example, 250 g at 27 cm and 260 g at 28 cm do not establish a like-for-like 10 g difference. These numbers are illustrative.
Separate stack height from drop
Stack height describes sole thickness, with separate values for the heel and forefoot. Drop describes the difference between them. Two shoes with the same heel height need not have the same drop.
A blank field means unverified, not zero. Mixing manufacturer figures with measurements from another publication can make differences in measurement position or conditions look like differences between models. We do not fill missing figures by guessing from another shoe.
Use the plate field to understand construction
Plate presence and material describe part of the midsole construction. They do not, on their own, determine suitability for a pace or comfort over a distance. Shapes and placements can differ even when the material is the same; consult the manufacturer's construction description where it matters to your decision.
Match the model and generation
At the purchase link, check the generation number and variants such as Plus or Trail. A shoe from the same family may still be a different model from the one you compared. Confirm the size, width and version instead of relying on the photograph alone.
Check the fit separately
Available widths can help narrow the options, but specifications cannot fully describe pressure over the instep or heel hold. When trying shoes on, use your usual running socks. For an online purchase, read the size chart and return or exchange conditions first.
Open candidates in the gear directory and start with fields whose measurement conditions are clear. There is no need to turn a specification into an unsupported claim about the ride.
